The principle of Butt Fusion joining of HDPE or PPR pipe is to heat two prepared surfaces to a designated temperature, then fuse them together by application of a sufficient force. This force causes the melted materials to flow and mix, thereby resulting in fusion. The socket fusion technique consists of simultaneously heating both the external surface of the pipe end and the internal surface of the socket fitting until the material reaches the recommended fusion temperature. Electrofusion is a simple method of joining pipes in circumstances where butt fusion is not practicable, incorporating an electrical fitting which melts the plastic of both the fitting and the pipe, causing them to fuse together.
